NAPIL Changes Name to Equal Justice Works

It's More Than a New Name -- It's a Mission

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- The National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL), one of the nation's largest nonprofits devoted to mobilizing lawyers and law students to do justice work, has changed its name to Equal Justice Works.

Adoption of the new name and a new logo, both of which became official on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the spring meeting of the organization's Board of Directors, followed a lengthy and deliberate selection process. Gregory Landis, Chairman of the Equal Justice Works Board and General Counsel for AT&T Wireless, noted, "Our new name tells our audiences that our mission is to create a just society and to mobilize the next generation of lawyers committed to equal justice. It's more than a new name; it's what we're all about."

David Stern, Executive Director, added, "Our old name didn't describe what we do -- and was nearly impossible to 'brand' with any audience. Our work doesn't fit the Washington-association model and the old acronym -- NAPIL -- was unpronounceable and made no sense."

According to Stern, throughout 2002, Equal Justice Works will build awareness of the new name through media events, the premiere of a new website and the launch of a poster and advertising campaign. "It's an exciting opportunity for us to showcase our good work using a name that fits our aspirations."

Equal Justice Works, formerly the National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL), leads the country in organizing, training and supporting public service-minded law students and in creating summer and postgraduate public interest jobs. Through more than eight million dollars in annual donations from prestigious law firms, corporations and foundations, Equal Justice Works funds law students and lawyers in programs that bring justice to millions of low-income persons and families.
