Sectra to Participate in Development of Future Network-Based Swedish Defense

LINKOPING, Sweden, March 19, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Sectra has been selected by the Swedish Defense to develop a prototype of a mobile terminal for the secure encryption of voice and data combined with GPS positioning. The value of the order is approximately SEK 5 million.

"This order is an acknowledgment of our cutting-edge expertise in IT and communications security," said Tommy Waszkiewicz, President of Sectra Communications AB.

The order means that the Swedish Defense is testing a future mobile encryption system concept that can be used at a later stage as a platform for various types of secure services, in which eavesdrop-secure positioning will play an important role. Through the implementation of GPS, map information containing tactical assignment information can be presented directly on the user's display and encrypted positioning coordinates from users can be assembled in, for example, an operations center. The prototype, or demonstrator, is to be delivered to the Swedish Defense during autumn 2002.

Facts About the Demonstrator and the Swedish Defense

In the period up to 2005, the Swedish Defense will produce about 30 different demonstrators for component systems that could be used by network-based defense. The purpose of a demonstrator is to test new technologies and concepts in terms of their operability and performance.
