Telelogic Signs IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN Contract with Silaria

Silaria Plans to Deliver Full 802.11 Solutions for Wireless LAN Products in 2002

MALMO, Sweden, April 8, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telelogic (Stockholm Exchange:TLOG), the leading global provider of advanced software and systems development, today announced that it has signed a contract to deliver a solution for the IEEE 802.11 standard to the Irish-headquartered, processor-development company Silaria. This contract builds on the previous success of Telelogic's 802.11 offering in other projects.

The IEEE 802.11 standard is today a market-leading standard used for the implementation of Wireless LANs. The Wireless LAN market is one of the fastest-growing areas of telecommunications -- according to a recent study by Synergy Research Group, the market for 802.11 is expected to grow by over 30% a year to a total value of $5 billion dollars in 2006.

Parts of the standard for the 802.11 MAC protocol have been documented in SDL using Telelogic's Tau SDL development tools. "By leveraging the advanced capabilities of Telelogic Tau, our real-time software development suite, we have developed a pre-fabricated, pre-packaged MAC Layer module that wireless LAN product providers can use. By not having to develop this themselves, they will be able to bring value-added, end-user applications to market faster than ever before," said Ingemar Ljungdahl, Chief Technology Officer of Telelogic.

In the Silaria project, Telelogic will implement the 802.11 MAC Layer module in Silaria's product offering. Silaria is developing full MAC and PHY solutions for 802.11 based platforms around their deeply embedded Proteus3 processor and decided to use Telelogic's 802.11 MAC-solution in order to accelerate their time-to-market and reduce project risk.

John Hickey, CEO of Silaria said, "Silaria decided to use the Telelogic 802.11 MAC because it gave us the best combination of proven quality, testability, flexibility, and adaptability to emerging standards and different hardware configurations. Silaria aims to have a Proteus3-based product using the stack and supporting 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g available from Q3 2002. These platform solutions will be optimised for streaming video and voice over packet applications with all the required quality of service, security and advanced power optimisation functionality."

About the 802.11 Standard

The 802.11 standard provides a common set of operational rules to facilitate interoperability of wireless local area networking (LAN) products from different vendors. Today, the standard offers transmission rates of up to 54 Mbps. The MAC layer, one of two sub-layers that make up the Data Link Layer, is responsible for moving data packets between network layer entities across a shared channel. In the case of wireless LAN, the shared channel is the air interface.

Telelogic's 802.11 MAC Layer Module

The Telelogic 802.11 MAC Layer module has been developed using the Telelogic Tau SDL Suite and is coded mainly in SDL with some lower level routines written directly in the C programming language. The model has been simulated and validated using the features of the SDL Suite to ensure its quality. Telelogic Tau provides automatic code generation and the code produced can then be ported to any combination of target hardware and real-time operating system since the SDL model is independent of the target platform. In addition to a variety of consulting services, Telelogic also offers a set of TTCN test scripts to verify the implementation at the design stage as well as during on-target testing. The MAC Layer module supports both 802.11a and 802.11b and is designed to be easily extendable to further standard options such as 802.11e, 802.11i, and 802.11g.

About Silaria's 802.11 Solution

The Silaria 802.11 solution is based around its Proteus3 scalable configurable processor. Proteus3 is optimised for embedded protocol processing with industry leading code density and the ability to scale performance, power and size to target application needs. Silaria's technology enables the Telelogic 802.11 MAC layer module to be accelerated for time critical tasks such as encryption (WEP, AES), frame decoding and buffer handling. Silaria are providing accelerators for all current and proposed security and cryptographic standards. Essentially the Silaria tools enables trading off some silicon for extra performance, functionality and code size reductions. Silaria is also providing accelerator interfaces for custom payload and content processing engines to enable maximum value add to be leveraged by the customer. This interface can also be used for host applications based on ARM or MIPS processors as well a Proteus3. More information about Silaria can be found at www.silaria.com.
