Nokia Takes Carriers a Step Closer in the Evolution to ALL-IP with the Nokia D500 Remote Access Module

Nokia today announced at SUPERCOMM 2002, the availability of the Nokia D500 Remote Access Module (RAM). Based on the Nokia D500 multiservice access platform introduced earlier this year, the Nokia D500 RAM is designed to support the economic deployment of broadband services in small sites where DSL line numbers are small and/or site space limitations exist.

Specifically engineered for cost efficiency in remote deployments, the Nokia D500 RAM offers up to 192 lines of DSL connectivity. The Nokia D500 RAM is an ATM-based remote access node that, like the central office based Nokia D500, can evolve to IP as the demand for IP services and network interfaces develops and as carriers migrate to All-IP networks. The Nokia D500 RAM is designed to be used as either a stand-alone, small, multiservice access node, or to be subtended to a "master" D500 access node. This configuration allows carriers to build flexible network architectures in order to optimize the cost of the network in relation to their acquisition of customers.

"The Nokia D500 RAM enables effective broadband media delivery to customers in remote locations, which is key for carriers striving to increase service and customer penetration," said Mark Slater, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Broadband Systems, Nokia Networks. "Future capabilities of the Nokia D500 RAM, such as increasing the capacity to Gigabit Ethernet and utilizing features like IP Multicast will allow carriers to continue to target new customers and revenue opportunities."

In addition to either an industry-standard command line interface (CLI), or an embedded WebCraft application for local OAM&P, the Nokia D500 RAM can also be remotely managed by Nokia NetAct for Broadband. Nokia NetAct for Broadband is a carrier-class broadband mediation and management platform that provides support for fault, inventory, configuration, performance and security management for the Nokia D500 and D500 RAM, as well as for Nokia's Intelligent Edge elements such as the Nokia ASR 2020.

Because space limitations are often a concern with remote deployments, the Nokia D500 RAM has been architected for simple vertical or horizontal rack- or wall-mount installation. It is deployable in street-side cabinets, building basements, Controlled Environmental Vaults (CEV), multi-tenant (MTU) and multi-dwelling units (MDU).

Featuring a flexible six-slot subrack, the Nokia D500 RAM can support four linecards providing either ADSL, SHDSL or VDSL interfaces. Various trunking interfaces are also provided, with both OC-3 and 100bT options available, of which the OC-3 variant can provide link redundancy so that service resiliency is maintained in the event of a fiber network failure. The Nokia D500 RAM can assist carriers in reducing the cost of their network operations, as it uses the same plug-in units as its "big brother", the Nokia D500, thereby saving the carrier the cost of having to invest in a separate set of spares specifically for the D500 RAM.

The Nokia D500 RAM will be globally available Q3 2002.

The Nokia D500 RAM will be demonstrated at the Nokia booth (Hall A2, #31942) at SUPERCOMM 2002 in the Georgia World Congress Center as part of a new, highly cost-efficient cabinet installation concept. The Nokia Rapid Deployment Access Cabinet concept can significantly reduce the high-cost, time-consuming, resource-intensive process of securing Right of Way, construction permits and concrete pads typically needed in remote DSL cabinet deployments today.
