Caribbean Festival 2002 Part of the PECO Energy Multicultural Series, Celebrating Caribbean Culture at Penn's Landing

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 5, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Festival Pier at Penn's Landing, Columbus Boulevard and Spring Garden Street, will be transformed into a party paradise on Sunday, August 18, 2002 from noon to 8 p.m. at the 16th Annual Caribbean Festival. Celebrate Caribbean culture with food, music, dancing and crafts. PECO Energy sponsors the Multicultural Series, and Independence Blue Cross is the presenting sponsor of the entire 2002 summer season at Penn's Landing.

The Caribbean Festival entertainment line up includes everything from gospel to reggae-rap, soca to steel band, ska and even poetry. The musical line-up will include the innovative sounds and infectious grooves of the calypso group, RASA and International Pop-Reggae star, Junior Jazz. Headlining the day, will be local Philadelphia favorites the Kabudi Project, featuring African Pop music and Reggae. Authentic dancers, stilt-walkers and storytellers will also entertain the crowd.

There will be an array of tempting island cuisine for visitors to enjoy. The Caribbean fare will include escovitched fish and festival cakes, codfish fritters and Jamaican hard-dough bread, curried goat, and Griot. Local beverages like Caribbean Kola Champagne, Sorrell, Caribbean Ade, carrot juice and Mauby drink will also be available.

This year's event will also feature the steel drum band, Pantastic in the Festival Pier Grand Pavilion, along with a Caribbean Culture booth featuring information sessions on such topics as hair braiding, religion, and fashion. A portion of Festival Pier will also be sectioned off for a DJ dance party featuring a variety of international music.

This Festival, presented by PECO Energy and the Caribbean Festival Committee, now in its 16th year, works to publicize the importance of the Island culture and the contribution of the Caribbean community to the Philadelphia region and to raise scholarship funds for college students of Caribbean descent.
