Should We Laugh When Things Go Wrong? The Wackiest Book on the ABM System

HAMPTON, Va., Oct. 31, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Sometimes even the simplest mistake can result in a grand disaster. Like a prototype Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) site gone out of control in the wacky novel "A Simple Mistake: (or: Is My Farce Red!?)" (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Author and comedian Dav Allen has a flair for finding humor even in the most absurd and sometimes critical situations such as the latest news reports about the U.S. withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

But it's all in the spirit of fun and adventure. Dav confessed he is following the footsteps of the great American comedian Fred Allen (no relation) who always looked for humor in any situation. He writes, "If I didn't laugh at myself, I'd have to cry."

Indeed, Dav grabs us like a snake charmer in "A Simple Mistake" as he narrates the misadventures of Captain Jerry Hire who was mistakenly selected to lead a group of frustrated airmen to protect an ABM site mistakenly situated in a peyote field -- an Indian Reservation site where semi-hostile wild warriors live. Among the twisted plots and tales, Captain Hire must first find a treatment for the dreaded `skunk fever' and Dav will leave you guessing what it is until the end.

Dav is a native of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, who first learned how to fly a plane before driving a car. He has written a number of short stories and is currently working on two more novels. Aside from Fred Allen, he admires Jack Benny and Rita Rudner. The latter, he says, is the funniest person he has ever seen. He lives in Virginia with his wife Joanne where, as a hobby, he races homing pigeons.
