Surface Technology Sytems plc -- Major New Order Announcement

NEWPORT, U.K., March 28, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Surface Technology Systems PLC ("STS") (Other OTC:SUTYF) (LSE:SRTS), the Newport-based supplier of high-tech wafer processing equipment to the MEMS, opto-electronics and semiconductor-related industries, announces its largest-ever MEMS equipment order. STS has won an order, from a major US based customer, for the supply of multiple Advanced Silicon Etch machines for the manufacture of next generation MEMS components. The order, worth 3 million Pounds, is the largest order for the growing MEMS industry in STS' history. The machines will be built in STS' state-of-the-art facility at Imperial Park, Newport and will be delivered in the second half of 2003.

MEMS are 'micro-electromechanical systems', based on miniature three-dimensional structures made out of silicon. The technology enabling the manufacture of MEMS devices in mass-production volume is the deep silicon etch process, successfully developed by STS.

"STS identified the use of semiconductor processing techniques for the emerging MEMS industry some 10 years ago" said Ian Smith, Chief Executive of STS. "The Company's strategy since then has been to provide equipment and solutions to customers for their R&D projects and then to supply them with machines for high volume production. This new order is a prime example of that strategy working in practice. It proves the potential for the future of MEMS and for STS".
