LAS VEGAS, April 7, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- NAB 2003 - Virage Booth No. SL1854 -- Virage, Inc. (Nasdaq:VRGE), a leading provider of video and rich media communication software, today introduced its next-generation SmartEncode(tm) product suite, including VideoLogger(r) 6.0 and ControlCenter(tm) 3.0. Virage will demonstrate these products for the first time at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) 2003 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 7-10, Virage booth No. SL1854.

With more than 350 installations worldwide, the Virage SmartEncode software is the industry's leading solution for automated capture, encoding and indexing of video. The new VideoLogger 6.0 captures multiple video feeds on a single machine, enabling a smaller and more efficient hardware footprint and expanding the capacity of existing facilities. Customers will also benefit from an array of new features including QuickTime MPEG-4 encoding, automated email notifications, and improved data backup and recovery.

"Our SmartEncode software is the most mature and robust solution available for video indexing and encoding," said Dave Girouard, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development at Virage. "In this latest version, we focused on the needs of our biggest customers by enhancing the efficiency and automation that our software offers to large facilities. Since the initial release of our SmartEncode software in 1997, Virage has set the standard for video indexing and encoding and this latest release raises the bar even further."

The SmartEncode suite includes the VideoLogger for automated encoding and indexing of video and the ControlCenter for centralized scheduling, monitoring and management of tens or even hundreds of capture stations. New features in VideoLogger 6.0 include:

 - Support for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Media 9.
 - Ability to capture multiple, simultaneous video feeds on a single
   machine.
 - Real-time software-based encoding for Apple QuickTime, including
support for MPEG-4, Sorenson and Cinepak compressions.
 - Automatic text decoding to extract text and timecode information
   from MPEG video files.
 - E-mail alerts to send notification upon recognition of any word or
data within the video data tracks.
 - Auto-save of information throughout a logging session to enable
data recovery in the event of a system failure.
 - FTP support to automatically upload video to a specified directory
upon completion of an encoding session.

ControlCenter software allows the centralized management of an array of VideoLogger capture stations. From a single console, ControlCenter automatically displays all available VideoLogger machines on the network, allowing an operator to configure, schedule, and monitor multiple incoming video feeds in a 24/7 environment. New features in ControlCenter 3.0 include:

 - A newly designed Windows user-interface to optimize operator
   productivity.
 - Automatic keyframe display of all available capture stations on
   the network.
 - "Start now" functionality to enable quick response to breaking
   events.
 - Scriptable task definition to support control of external systems
such as video routers or satellite switches.
 - Support for MySQL and Oracle9i databases.

In addition to VideoLogger and ControlCenter, the Virage SmartEncode suite includes a variety of media analysis and database plug-ins as well as the VideoLogger Software Developer's Kit (SDK). The VideoLogger SDK provides a mature set of programming interfaces that have been tested by dozens of systems integrators and developers worldwide. The SmartEncode suite is 100-percent internationalized with full support for both single and multi-byte languages. Virage offers speech recognition capabilities in eight languages including U.S. English, UK English, Brazilian Portuguese, Castilian Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic.
