Surviving Stroke With Pride -- New book focuses on one woman's determination to put life back together after stroke

TROY, Mich., August 28, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- When I Learn ... Surviving Stroke with Pride (now available through 1stBooks), by Donna Brady, is one woman's account of her ordeal with the emotional spiral of stroke and her journey to survival. The book takes the reader inside the mind of a survivor and shows the turmoil of the victim's struggle between the "new me" and the "old me." Brady also focuses on the stroke victim's search for understanding. Each chapter depicts a different experience during stoke recovery and her own reflections about the events.

When I Learn... puts things in perspective for survivors, families, and friends. It is Brady's attempt to help other survivors convey what they may not be able to vocalize. The author also details her anguish at becoming legally blind and the harrowing times when she could no longer read or write, became confused or felt disoriented.

Brady was born in Las Vegas in 1963. She traveled extensively as a result of her father's USAF career. She played softball for the University of Missouri-Columbia for two years and acted as a head counselor during her college summers at Camp Thunderbird, located in northern Minnesota. Brady has a bachelor's degree in child and family development from the University of Missouri-Columbia and was working on her master's degree in accounting at Walsh College in Troy, Mich., when she fell victim to a stroke.

She and her husband, Mike, have three daughters, who are "the focus of their lives." For the past 16 years, Brady has worked as a contract specialist and procurement analyst. In addition to her stroke, she has survived numerous traumas, including a friend's tragic death of a brain aneurysm; an undiagnosed neuralgic illness that left her hospitalized after the birth of her second child; a blown disk, which caused spinal cord compression and required an emergency cervical spin fusion; and a second cervical fusion following her stroke.

Brady's ability to keep and show a positive attitude has contributed to her recovery.

She currently resides in Troy, Mich.
