Neoware Thin Client Appliances Make the Grade at Jamestown Community College

New York College Switches From PCs to More Reliable and Easier to Manage Thin Client Appliances

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Oct. 1, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Neoware Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:NWRE), the leading supplier of software, services and thin client appliances, today announced that Jamestown Community College of New York is enhancing students' access to information by installing Neoware's thin client appliances.

Jamestown Community College is one of the oldest and largest community colleges in the State University system of New York, offering humanities and liberal arts programs. Jamestown was looking to extend the lifespan of its computing platform investments beyond the two to three years it was receiving from PCs. In addition, the college wanted to provide a more reliable and easier to administer architecture, as well as reduce the burden on its small IT staff who frequently had to attend to personal computers being taken offline by students changing configurations.

Jamestown began replacing PCs with Neoware's thin client appliances, which store all applications and data on servers. By centrally administering the applications and appliances, Jamestown's IT staff can prevent students from downloading viruses or other unwanted applications. Network administrators can easily perform upgrades or roll out new applications to Neoware's thin clients at the school's four campuses without having to leave their offices. To enhance reliability, Neoware's thin clients do not require hard drives or floppy drives, reducing the number of components that can fail and require repair.

"By moving to Neoware's thin client appliances and management software, Jamestown Community College is creating a durable computing environment that allows students to readily access research information, so they can advance their academic pursuits," said Jeff Camp, Network Systems Administrator at Jamestown Community College. "Neoware is the obvious choice for educational institutions that want to maximize their investment in technology," said Camp, who recently recommended Neoware during his presentation about the benefits of thin client computing at a national education conference.

Jamestown is installing Neoware's thin clients in the library, computer labs and open research labs. According to Camp, in most cases, students are unaware that they are using thin clients rather than PCs.

"Educational institutions such as Jamestown Community College are embracing Neoware's thin client appliances because they offer all of the functionality and performance of a PC, and they are the simplest solution for network administrators to deploy and manage for remote campuses," said Michael Kantrowitz, Chairman and CEO of Neoware Systems. "Neoware also protects their investment in technology since thin clients offer a longer lifecycle than PCs."

Jamestown Community College acquired Neoware's thin clients through IBM, which offers Neoware products through its Partner Choice Program. This program is designed to offer qualified resellers access to a variety of Neoware products to include in their existing sales initiatives. The Partner Choice Program provides IBM Business Partners with benefits such as discounts based on volume, downloadable sales tools, current price lists and technical resources.
