Enablement, Empowerment and Wellness - Author offers crisis intervention program for adolescents

PETERSHAM, Mass., Oct. 14, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Author and longtime guidance counselor Lorraine R. Maille writes that there are countless crisis intervention programs for treating adolescents; however, these programs very seldomly improve students' emotional welfare. In response, she's created her own method, which she details in Enablement, Empowerment, and Wellness: A Crisis Intervention Program for Counselors Working with Students of High School and College Age (now available through 1stBooks).

A certified teacher and guidance counselor, Maille puts her background in sociology, psychology and guidance and her professional career as a university counselor and high school director of guidance to work in her new book. Her method improves upon several established disciplines to achieve the counselor's primary goal: to enhance the client's wellbeing. Her crisis intervention program is targeted for short-term counseling and is "eclectic in nature." The author draws from developmental psychology, education and art and offers several unique features, such as the "Circle of Current Concerns." She also uses two case studies to illustrate how the cognitive behavioral approach to wellness is applied and gives permission to counselors to copy select pages of useful text.

From course selections and scheduling to college admission advice and resume writing, a counselor's duties are varied and time-consuming. Maille realizes that, with the number of students in crisis rising, counselors are in dire need of a solid "counseling arsenal" to help their clients achieve emotional wellness and manage their daily anxieties.

With a focus cognitive behavioral skills, Enablement, Empowerment and Wellness stresses the importance of building character and personal development and encourages the a lifelong pursuit of wellness.

Maille currently resides in Petersham, Mass.
