QLogic Powers Next-Generation, Enterprise Hard Drives from Hitachi

QLogic FTEC495 and TEC495 Controllers Provide Fibre Channel and SCSI Interface for Disk Drive Giant

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Oct. 15, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- QLogic Corp. (Nasdaq:QLGC), the company that powers storage area networks (SANs), today announced that Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) has selected QLogic FTEC495 and TEC495 controller chips to enable Fibre Channel and SCSI connectivity in future versions of Hitachi Ultrastar hard disk drives, targeted for full volume production in 2004.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies was founded in 2003 as a result of the strategic combination of the disk drive storage technology businesses of Hitachi and IBM. Hitachi GST offers customers worldwide the most comprehensive range of storage products for desktop computers, high-performance servers and mobile devices.

"Hitachi has chosen to work with QLogic because I/O performance and reliability are critically important to our enterprise customers," said Dr. Fumio Kugiya, general manager, Server HDD Business Unit, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. "Integrating TEC and FTEC controllers into our Ultrastar hard drive family supports Hitachi's strategy to deliver the ultimate in performance, quality and reliability, generation after generation."

"With the incorporation of IBM's disk drive business, Hitachi is undeniably a major force in the storage industry," said Dave Tovey, vice president and general manager of QLogic's Peripheral Products Group. "With more than 14 years' experience as the leading independent enterprise hard disk drive controller supplier, we are pleased to power Hitachi GST's newest enterprise products with our latest TEC product family. By continually building on innovative architecture, QLogic controllers enable faster throughput and ensure the superior reliability demonstrated by tens of millions of field-installed drives."

QLogic TEC Family of Hard Disk Drive Controllers

The QLogic TEC product family includes TEC SCSI, FTEC Fibre Channel and STEC Serial Attached SCSI controllers for hard disk drives, removable drives and optical drives. A single common architecture allows the customer's existing field-proven firmware modules to power new I/O platforms across multiple product generations, thus optimizing time-to-market and minimizing support and customer risk.

The TEC family of controllers combines the industry's highest performance with all the features required by leading hard disk drive suppliers. Flexible hardware design easily enables multiple customer features and fast off-disk data rates, while highly automated interface logic enables high throughput with low drive microprocessor overhead, maximizing overall performance. Programmable hardware design supports multiple customer hard disk drive features, giving drive designers a wide range of choices and maximum control. TEC devices include powerful ECC data protection. To minimize cost and board real estate requirements, all QLogic hard disk controllers are highly integrated, single chip solutions with embedded I/O transceivers.
