AIDS Through the Eyes of a Caregiver -- Author tells of losing brother and friend to AIDS virus

MIDDLETOWN, Del., Nov. 10, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Author Dawn L. Rowe lost her brother and best friend to the AIDS virus. In her new book, AIDS...Through the Eyes of a Caregiver (now available through 1stBooks), she offers an inspiring story of her exhausting ordeal, the toll AIDS took on her loved ones and advice for those caring for the terminally ill.

Rowe and her brother, Keith, were very close as children. Rowe cared for her brother and her best friend, Mark, until their last days. Watching their bodies wither under the influence of this disease, Rowe slipped into a depression that she would battle for six years. Her emotional pain, fear and anguish led her to attempt suicide several times. The effects on her family were also profound. Her mother, Ethel, died shortly after Keith; her heart failure was possibly caused by the stress of severe grief, Rowe writes.

Rowe eventually sees the light of God, which she credits for her "season of healing" and her return to a life with happiness. Scripture passages are scattered throughout the book, offering uplifting messages to those witnessing a loved one fighting a terminal illness, especially AIDS. From exhaustion, hopelessness and helplessness, Rowe tells how her emotional hell turned struggle into a spiritual lesson from Heaven.

Rowe hopes her book offers guidance and a strong reminder to caregivers that God has a plan for each person, whether it includes sorrow or joy.

Rowe has taught gospel music and directed young musicians for more than 20 years in Middletown, Del. She is also a playwright whose AIDS awareness scripts have been widely performed. AIDS...Through the Eyes of a Caregiver is her first book.
