The True Confessions of an Abandoned War Bride -- New Memoir Chronicles a Moving Story of Survival and Triumph of the Human Spirit

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 8, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Get to know your history. Learn where your ancestors came from and be proud of who you are. Just like author Monique D. Downs. In an attempt to create a link between her past and present, she wrote Abandoned War Bride, an extraordinary new autobiography that chronicles her life before, during, and after the World War II.

Monique Downs' memoir starts with her childhood in France. She talks about how her big, hardworking family was making progress until the war, and how her father's loss of vision further crippled the family. When the American liberation reached France, Monique became infatuated with an American soldier, married him, and was shipped to the United States as a war bride and eventually abandoned her in rural Mississippi. But God did not abandon her. He gave her the strength to take refuge in New Orleans where she began picking up the pieces, found the love of her life, married him and achieved her dreams.

After so many years of guilt and secrets, Monique has finally opened herself to her family and to the world. Through Abandoned War Bride, she comes face to face with the ghosts of her past and finally releases herself from the shackles of unresolved issues. Ultimately, she gets to share her story with her children so they may know their history and know themselves better.
