Everglades Outlaws: Criminals or Victims?

New Book Follows the Dangerous Trail of the Outlaw

NAPLES, Fla., May 6, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a perfect world, there are no outlaws. In a perfect world, Robert V. Griffin's provocative new book, Everglades Outlaws, would not exist. Drawing heavily on his own experiences as an outlaw, he tells a fictional story portraying four generations of lawbreakers and their brush with the law.

Through the lives of James, Sam, Jessie, and Cap, the book gives names to the realities society has a hard time grappling with. A line of Florida crackers, these generations of Taylor men smuggled their way to survival in a world predicated on fierce judgments and condemnation. In the end, the readers become the judge whether these men are criminals or merely victims of the same system that they defy.

Writing the book in federal prison, Griffin says that whatever you may feel about outlaws, they are a part of the world we live in. Some of them are forced by poverty and circumstances to choose the outlaw trail. As a famous quote once stated, "There but for the grace of God go I." Everglades Outlaws, with its raw honesty and dangerous implications, becomes a literary tour de force to reckon with.
