Emulex Provides Engenio With InSpeed Embedded Switch Technology

Engenio Integrates Emulex InSpeed Technology Into its Switched Drive Module for Increased RAS and Performance

COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 7, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the world leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters and embedded storage switches, today announced that Engenio Information Technologies, Inc. will integrate Emulex's award winning and field proven InSpeed switch-on-a-chip (SOC) technology into its new 2 Gb/s FC switched drive module. Engenio utilizes the Emulex InSpeed SOC 320 to create an "SBOD application," which improves the reliability and performance of storage solutions by bringing 2Gb/s switched connectivity to each individual disk drive within the storage array.

With over 2 million ports shipped in its first 2-years, InSpeed technology is now the storage industry's leading solution for creating switched back-end architectures. The InSpeed SOC 320 is Emulex's second generation of 2 Gb/s embedded storage switch technology, incorporating a host of innovative features and functionality like a completely non-blocking, dynamically switching, crossbar switch core. Dynamic switching allows connection of any port to any port to deliver unmatched internal bandwidth and redundancy for increasing storage system performance and RAS characteristics.

"The Emulex InSpeed SOC 320 is a key element of our newest Switched Drive Module, helping to improve Fibre Channel drive loop resiliency and performance by reducing node delays (loop latency)," said Bill Brant, Engenio Vice President of Engineering. "By reducing the number of nodes on the drive loop, the switched drive module provides linearly scalable performance in large configurations."

The Engenio switched drive module also offers improved reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). By integrating the InSpeed SOC 320, Engenio brings point-to-point switched connectivity and enhanced drive-level diagnostics to the individual drives in the storage array.

"Engenio has created an exciting new switched drive module that leverages InSpeed technology to bring users an enhanced suite of diagnostics and management capabilities," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Emulex Corporation. "For Emulex, Engenio's implementation of our InSpeed technology represents another validation point and brings us a new storage industry leader as a customer for our embedded switch technology."
