Northrop Grumman, Penn State to Collaborate on Development of New Electronics Technologies


STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Oct. 13, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) is joining forces with Penn State University to research and develop advanced defensive electronic systems.

This five-year agreement between Penn State and Northrop Grumman expands the existing relationship between Penn State and Northrop Grumman's Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector.

"This partnership with Penn State will enable Northrop Grumman to meet a growing number of new high-technology program requirements for our core customer base in the government R&D market," said James F. Carlini, vice president for Products and Technology at Northrop Grumman's Systems Development and Technology Division. "This relationship will enable us to leverage today's brightest minds to rapidly develop next generation technologies and systems in areas such as micro-electromechanical systems, electro-optics, and sonar."

"For faculty and students at Penn State, the opportunity to do relevant and commercially useful research is an important component of the educational experience," said Dr. Ronald J. Huss, assistant vice president for Research and Technology Transfer and director of the university's Intellectual Property Office. "Programs such as this fulfill a central mission of the university -- to serve the people of Pennsylvania and the nation."

Penn State's industrial research office (IRO) assists companies in locating research expertise, negotiating sponsored research agreements and providing services that lead to a mutually beneficial partnership for both parties. Penn State is ranked third in the United States in expenditures on research funded from industry sources.

Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector is a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of defense and commercial electronic systems and sensors, including airborne radar, navigation systems, electronic countermeasures, precision weapons, airspace management systems, communications systems, space sensors, marine and naval systems, government systems, and logistics services.
