New Patent Addresses Key Technology Aspects of ATC Infrastructure and ATC/Satellite Terminal

RESTON, Va., Dec. 6, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) announced today that the company has been awarded a second patent for its next-generation satellite system technology with Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC) innovation.

Patent #6,785,543 B2 is titled, "Filters for Combined Radiotelephone/GPS Terminals."

"This patent will protect both infrastructure and mobile device aspects of MSV's next-generation system with ATC," says Dr. Carson E. Agnew, president and COO of MSV.

"The patent discloses mobile devices equipped with GPS signal processing and filtering means that optimize location determination performance," says Dr. Peter Karabinis, chief technology officer at MSV. "In addition, the patent discloses ATC base station antenna sub-systems with minimal radiation at and/or above the horizon."

Terrestrial networks such as ATC can enhance mobile satellite system availability, efficiency and economic viability by terrestrially reusing at least some of the frequency bands that are allocated to cellular satellite radiotelephone systems.

Without ATC, it may be challenging for mobile satellite systems to reliably serve densely populated areas, because the satellite's signal may be blocked by high rise structures and may not penetrate into buildings. As a result, the satellite spectrum may be underutilized or unused in such areas. The use of ATC retransmission can reduce or eliminate this problem.

With this patent and 40 other pending applications covering the next-generation satellite technology of ATC, MSV has once again demonstrated strong leadership in advanced developments.
