Jordanian Delegation Visits Michigan to Promote Bilateral Trade and Investment


DETROIT, March 30, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- AmCham-Jordan, the American Jordanian Chamber of Commerce, is sending a high-level delegation to Michigan to explore business and trade opportunities between the State of Michigan and Jordan on April 13, 14 and 15.

The main objective of the delegation will be to promote trade and investment cooperation between private businesses in the State of Michigan and Jordan and to encourage Michigan businesses to trade with and invest in Jordan.

The delegation of eight representatives, which will first stop in Washington, D.C., is headed by AmCham Jordan Chairman Azzam Shweihat and CEO Rose Alissi Wazani.

"We are excited to come to Michigan and to seek trade and investment opportunities," said Mr. Shweihat. "Michigan has long been a priority because of its strong manufacturing base and established Arab-American community."

"We are interested to do business in Michigan mainly because of the large Arab-American community and Michigan's sensitivity and understanding of the Middle East," said Ms. Wazani. She continued, "We see this region as a potential gateway to Jordan and the Middle East."

Other members of the delegation are: Mr. Rasim Abderrahim, International Trade Advisor, AmCham-Jordan; Mr. Tamer Al-Mauge, Business Development Officer, AmCham-Jordan; Dr. Walid Al-Turk, Vice Chairman, AmCham-Jordan,Mr. Mohammad Bataineh, Member of the Board, AmCham-Jordan; Dr. Hiba Lamber, Head of Pharmaceuticals and Health Care Sector, Jordan Investment Board and Ms. Rania Soubar, Promotion Officer, Jordan Investment Board.

AmCham-Jordan was founded in 1989 as JABA, the Jordanian-American Business Association, a non-profit organization established with the mission of promoting trade and investment between Jordan and the United States.

Jordan and the United States signed the Jordan Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2000. The FTA eliminates duties for goods and services originating in the U.S. and Jordan and opens opportunities for joint US-Jordanian business cooperation in goods, services, bilateral investment, and other fields.

Michigan is home to the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the U.S. with over 300,000 people.
