Marygrove Appoints Dr. David Fike as Provost

DETROIT, May 24, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Dr. Glenda Price, president of Marygrove College, announces the appointment of David J. Fike, PhD, as Provost, effective August 1, 2005.

As provost, Dr. Fike will serve as Marygrove's chief operating officer with responsibility for all academic programs as well as all activities related to the education of students, including Student Affairs. He will also act as lead decision maker in the president's absence.

Dr. Fike comes to Marygrove from Holy Names University in Oakland, California, where he has been Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Faculty since 1997. He joined Holy Names in 1992 as associate professor of economics.

As Chief Academic Officer, he had oversight of the $6.5 million annual Academic Affairs Division budget, all academic programs, campus information technology, library services, student registration processes, learning support resources and advising services.

He is an economics professor at the graduate and undergraduate level and a frequent guest lecturer and presenter on such topics as socially responsible investing, economic revitalization and community development.

Dr. Fike owns Developing Alternatives for Economic Progress in Oakland, California, through which he counsels governmental units and corporations on economic revitalization, sustainable community development practices, workforce development, capital access in underserved markets and strategic decision making.

Dr. Fike received his B.A. in political science with high honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1999, he coauthored the book "Everything You Need to Know about Economics" with Gregg Stebben, published by Simon & Schuster.

Marygrove President Dr. Glenda Price said, "After seven years as chief academic officer of a college much like Marygrove in mission and commitment to its community, Dr. Fike brings to our community solid administrative and faculty experience and success that bodes well for our college. He will assume the same leadership roles at Marygrove."

"As Marygrove begins preparing for our re-accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association," said Dr. Price, "Dr. Fike's presence as provost with his previous experience leading the accreditation process at Holy Names will be pivotal."

Dr. Fike said of his decision to come to Marygrove, "What a historic past, steeped in a tradition of educating generations of leaders. What an exciting future! I'm happy to have a role in shaping that future and I look forward to meeting everyone associated with Marygrove and the greater Detroit community."
