Elekta and IMPAC Selected by French Hospital To Deliver Comprehensive Treatment Management Solution

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 31, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Centre Hospitalier de Rodez has recently chosen to enhance the treatment delivery within their new radiation therapy unit with the acquisition of two new Elekta Precise(TM) linear accelerators with Multileaf Collimators & iViewGT(TM) imaging system, together with the integrated Oncology Information System (OIS) developed by IMPAC Medical Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Elekta. The site has chosen the IMPAC OIS to provide the core Image-Enabled Oncology EMR (electronic medical record) functionality, along with integrated tools designed for Radiation Oncology Treatment Management, Resource Scheduling and Procedure Management.

IMPAC's comprehensive OIS was designed specifically to help radiotherapy centers manage the entire spectrum of cancer care with process automation tools that improve workflow efficiencies while simultaneously reduce the risks of medical errors. In addition, with a vendor-independent infrastructure, the IMPAC OIS allows for best-of-breed hardware configurations and ensures interoperability of multi-vendor radiotherapy equipment -- including treatment planning systems, imaging devices, simulators, and linear accelerators.

"Among the key reasons the clinical team at Rodez has chosen Elekta is the flexibility of the solution offered, including French language interfaces and data export tools specific to local data reporting and epidemiological study requirements," said Olof Sanden, Vice President, Region Manager for Europe. "In addition to meeting regulatory reporting requirements, with comprehensive demographic & epidemiological data stored within the Oncology Information System that is easily reportable, it is now possible for the site to substantiate performance and refine clinical practices to continuously improve patient outcomes and advance population-based cancer research," he continued.

"The decision at CH Rodez to purchase digital accelerators with an integrated Oncology Information System from Elekta was based on several factors. Equipment quality was a key issue together with the development potential of innovative techniques such as IMRT & IGRT," said Dr. Alain Marre, Head of the RT Dept at CH Rodez. "The advantage of having an OIS that provides a real management tool for the department, in line with the philosophy of an Oncology Co-ordination centre such as is organized in Rodez is extremely beneficial. Also, the system optimizes verification and traceability of treatments and includes a tool to measure the activity within Oncology."

Francois Spriet, General Manager Elekta France concluded, "We have provided Rodez with a seamless single vendor solution for radiation therapy and oncology information systems which will provide them with the very best in Hardware & Software technologies in the fight against cancer."
