Scania at the UITP in Rome: Scania Introduces Bus Engines with EGR -- Consistent Environmental Performance Guaranteed

SODERTALJE, Sweden, June 06, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania enables public transport operators to comply with ever-stricter emission regulations without the complexity of aftertreatment with additives. Scania's Euro 4 and Euro 5 bus engines use EGR, exhaust gas recirculation, which is effective in all conditions and guarantees consistent environmental performance. Patented Scania solutions give excellent operating economy and maximum convenience for drivers and operators. Deliveries will build up gradually from November 2005.

"Scania recognises the advantage of simply operating on diesel and the need for city buses to live up to expected emission standards in all conditions," says Group Vice President Hasse Johansson, head of research and development at Scania.

"Scania has therefore decided on a long-term strategy that involves using cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) on buses to reduce emissions for Euro 4 as well as Euro 5. EGR is a tried-and-proven technology that is used on diesel engines worldwide today. Environmental performance is secured in all operating conditions, including stop-go city and suburban traffic.

"So far we have sold more than 2,000 Euro 4 trucks with Scania EGR to customers all over Europe.

"Scania EGR, with its patented recirculation system, cuts emissions at source and prevents them from arising in the first place. A maintenance-free particulate filter will be available for operators seeking to reduce particulate emissions beyond legal limits.

"The new 9-litre 5-cylinder engines are part of Scania's modular engine platform, which is renowned for excellent operating economy and reliability. High torque from low revs provides excellent driveability and fuel economy.

"Scania strives to make things simple and efficient for operators. No extra substances need to be handled and no extra installations are required on a Scania bus," concludes Mr Johansson.

Euro 4 becomes mandatory in October 2006 and Euro 5 in October 2009.

UITP: Every second year, the international association of public transport UITP (Union International des Transport Public) organises a world congress and exhibition targeted at decision makers and public transport operators. This year's event is held 6-9 June in Rome.
