STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 20, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Vodafone Sweden's customers can now download songs on their way to work, watch the highlights from the latest Allsvenskan matches on the station platform or connect up to the Internet on the tube. The travelling - and therefore also the waiting - will become more fun when Vodafone Sweden opens up its 3G network in Stockholm's underground network ahead of the midsummer.
"Stockholm is one of the first cities to provide 3G throughout its underground system, allowing the public to fill travelling and waiting time with benefit and entertainment services. With a 3G mobile in your hand, you can download music and 3D games, read the news headlines, connect up to the Internet and much more to fill commuting and waiting time with content," says Magnus Forsbrand, Chief Technical Officer at Vodafone Sweden. The 3G network in the Stockholm underground covers 59 stations and ticket halls. The 130 kilometres of cabling inside the tunnels furnishes commuters with 3G coverage between all the stations.
"The extension of the 3G network in the underground has been performed in collaboration with SL (Stockholm Transport) and other operators, and we are delighted at now being able to provide customers with all the possibilities of 3G even when they're down underground," says Magnus Forsbrand at Vodafone Sweden.
Vodafone Sweden offers coverage in the underground since 2000.
