The Basics for a Healthy, Wiser Life -- New Book Teaches Skills Often Neglected in Today's Society

EDISON, N.J., August 30, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- The learning facilities that prepare youth for successful futures in professional endeavors do not address many important aspects of how to live at their highest developmental level, writes author Meena Kukreja, M.D. In her new book, Life Skills: What Your Schools Forgot to Teach You Volume I (now available through AuthorHouse), she fills in the gaps with essential information that empowers people to improve their quality of life.

The first of two volumes, Life Skills presents a summary of lifestyle choices that range from personal hygiene to daily spiritual devotion. It addresses what Kukreja calls "second education," or the one not dealt with in school.

"We have two lives: public, or professional, and personal," she explains. "Our schools prepare us for our public or professional life. They focus on telling us about our external world. But they do not teach us how to react to this world. This second education was equally valued in olden days. It was a core of beliefs that our parents, our religion and society passed on to us. Today, we have ignored this education completely. Consequently, we are lost, and we suffer."

Life Skills seeks to bring basic information back into awareness. Kukreja draws from her professional medical experience and personal beliefs to provide a range of daily practices that are easy to implement and can improve one's life. From eating to praying to dealing with others on a regular basis, readers learn simple ways to cope with a complex environment.

A practical guide to contemporary living, Life Skills provides essential knowledge that has fallen by the wayside in modern times.

Kukreja is a doctor with more than 30 years of practice on two continents. Because of her father's work in the Foreign Service, she has lived in many countries and has been exposed to a variety of cultures. In addition, she says, she has learned "all religions." She strongly believes that there are two types of education, and with Life Skills, her first book, she hopes to both raise awareness of this fact and to teach people the importance of healthy reactions to today's complicated world.
