Old Chairs Become Works of Art at Marygrove College's 'Have A Seat' Chair Auction and Strolling Dinner November 10

DETROIT, Oct. 19, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Marygrove College will host the "Have A Seat" Chair Auction and Strolling Dinner on Thursday, November 10, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. in the Madame Cadillac Building at 8425 West McNichols in Detroit.

This event commemorates the 100th anniversary of Marygrove and its predecessor, St. Mary College in Monroe. Celebrated on Founder's Day, "Have A Seat" features the work of local artists, Marygrove faculty and students and members of the Detroit area community who have transformed old Marygrove chairs into objets d'arte.

"Have A Seat" guests will stroll through Madame Cadillac Hall, enjoying a variety of foods and beverages, great entertainment by students and alumni, while bidding on 60 clever, creative and avante garde works of art during the silent and live auction. Smooth Jazz V98.7 radio personality Sandy Kovach will emcee the live auction.

President Dr. Glenda Price said, "The entire Marygrove community is grateful to our chair artists whose love of Marygrove is beautifully expressed in their donation of time, talent and inspiration. Our students, today and tomorrow, will be the ones who will really benefit from their creativity. We welcome the Metro Detroit community to view and bid on these great original works of art for their homes."

In Fall 2004, Dr. Price challenged the creativity of faculty, students, alumni and local artists to come up with a way to add value to these plain brown chairs for the owner and the College. Some of these chairs date back to Marygrove's opening in 1927 and were manufactured by High Point Bending and Chair Co. of Siler City, North Carolina; Charlotte Chair Co. of Charlotte, Michigan; and Murphy Co. of Kentucky.

Among the art pieces are "My Love" by local designer and Marygrove Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, Dominic Pangborn; the Smooth JazzFest 2005 Artist Chair by Smooth Jazz V98.7; and Mexicaniconism by Nora Chapa Mendoza. The pieces are as varied in theme as the artists who submitted them. Several of the chairs are on display in Metro Detroit: In Downtown Birmingham, at Au Chocolat, Labelle Provence, Imelda's Closet, Oliver's and Art Loft; and in Detroit at the Children's Museum.

A sampling of the chairs is available at www.marygrove.edu/HaveASeat where an online auction is taking place till noon on October 25. The event is sponsored by Compuware Corporation and Plunkett & Cooney, P.C., as benefactors and Butzel Long, St. John Health, the Callahan Family and the Lynch Family.
