Photo Release -- David J. Fike, Ph.D., Named 8th President of Marygrove College


DETROIT, March 20, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Board of Trustees of Marygrove College announces the appointment of David J. Fike, Ph.D., as its new president, effective July 1, 2006. Dr. Fike is the current provost of Marygrove, having joined the College on August 1, 2005. He succeeds retiring Dr. Glenda D. Price, who has led Marygrove for eight years.

Dr. Fike has served as Marygrove's chief academic officer with responsibility for leadership and administrative support of all academic and student development programs as well as Enrollment Services. Since August, he has facilitated the 2006-2009 Strategic Planning Process, which includes developing consensus on a distinctive strategic vision for the College, has reviewed and revised student recruitment and financial aid awarding strategies and has worked with faculty to review and revise the Faculty Handbook.

Joyce Hayes-Giles, president of the Marygrove Board of Trustees, said, "The Board saw in Dr. Fike someone uniquely suited to building those critical partnerships with the Board, the faculty and staff, our students and the broader community necessary to move Marygrove forward. In his short tenure, he has embraced our mission and has demonstrated leadership skills that will assist the College in achieving our strategic vision of 'Urban Leadership.'"

Prior to his appointment at Marygrove, Dr. Fike had been chief academic officer and dean of faculty at Holy Names University in Oakland, California, a position he held from 1997 until 2005.

As chief academic officer, he had oversight of the $6.5 million annual Academic Affairs Division budget, all academic programs, campus information technology, library services, student registration processes, learning support resources and advising services.

He joined Holy Names in 1992 as a faculty member in economics, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels and serving as a frequent guest lecturer and presenter on such topics as socially responsible investing, economic revitalization and community development.

Dr. Fike has also served as a consultant to governmental units and corporations on economic revitalization, sustainable community development practices, workforce development, capital access in underserved markets and strategic decision making.

Dr. Fike received his B.A. in political science with high honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1999, he coauthored the book Everything You Need to Know about Economics with Gregg Stebben, published by Simon & Schuster. He is also the author of Trade Financing Restrictions and Politics: Implications for Country Risk, published in 1993 by the University of Maryland at College Park.

He is a frequent presenter and panelist. In November 2005, Dr. Fike presented "From Information to Formation: Integrating Catholic School Teaching in Student Learning" to the Catholic Colleges and University Chief Academic Officers at the Council of Independent College Chief Academic Officers Institute Annual Meeting in San Antonio. He also presented "The Educational Effectiveness Review, Workshop III" for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in April 2005 in San Diego.

Dr. Fike has received numerous awards and recognition, including the three-year designation as Group XV Fellow of the Kellogg National Leadership Program.

He is married with three grown children.
