Marygrove College Introduces Two Online Master's Degrees for Teachers

DETROIT, Jan. 16, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Marygrove College today announced its partnership with Teachscape, Inc., of San Francisco, CA, to offer online Master in the Art of Teaching (MAT) degrees for elementary and secondary school teachers.

The Master in the Art of Teaching in Reading & Literacy, Grades K-6, will begin on January 22. The Master in the Art of Teaching in Mathematics, Grades K-5, will start in summer '07.

As one of the pioneers of distance learning Master's degrees for teachers, Marygrove has more than 20,000 graduates since it introduced the MAT in 1996, making its program one of the largest in the nation.

Teachscape is the country's leading provider of professional development services to schools and school districts.

"When Marygrove decided to expand and diversify our distance learning programs to reflect the needs of today's educators," said President David Fike, PhD, "it was important for our legacy of quality teacher education to find a partner with the same dedication. After a national search, it was clear that Teachscape had the knowledge and the technology to help Marygrove move aggressively into the world of online learning for educators."

Mark Atkinson, CEO of Teachscape, said, "The Master's programs that we and Marygrove develop will be highly relevant, academically rigorous, engaging and convenient. What sets these programs apart is Teachscape's best-in-class, proprietary online learning technology, our extensive library of streaming video teaching cases and our connection to national and international subject matter experts. Marygrove has a stellar reputation among teachers around the country for the quality of its programs and we make a great team."

The online MAT in Reading & Literacy, Grades K-6, provides comprehensive study in the reading process and the instructional techniques, focusing on the structure of language and the five components of reading.

With the online MAT in Mathematics, Grades K-5, elementary teachers assess their own conceptual understanding of fundamental mathematics and build their own concept knowledge by moving from procedural the conceptual strategies in the areas of number and operations, measurement, geometry, algebra, and data analysis and probability.
