BrandProtect to Provide Data for Anti-Phishing Service in Windows Internet Explorer 7

BrandProtect to Supply Intelligence on Known Web Fraud for Phishing Filter Service in Windows Vista and Windows XP

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - February 06, 2007) - BrandProtect, an industry leader in online brand protection, today announced it is working with Microsoft Corp. to provide anti-phishing data for the Microsoft Phishing Filter service in all supported platforms of Internet Explorer 7. This will help protect both Microsoft Windows(R) Vista and Windows XP SP2 customers from Web fraud and data theft. Under terms of the agreement announced at the RSA(R) Conference 2007 this week, BrandProtect will provide Microsoft with dynamic daily feeds of known phishing Web sites as they are detected and are being shut down. As a result, customers of Internet Explorer 7 will have access to a new source of valuable information for better protection from fraudulent and known phishing Web sites. "By providing Microsoft with continuous daily feeds of reported phishing sites, we are helping to protect the online safety of the millions of users," said Hugh Hyndman, CTO of BrandProtect. "Through a combination of technology, collaboration and education, Microsoft has taken a multi-pronged approach to prevent phishing scams and fraud. BrandProtect is proud to be part of the consortium of companies supporting this important initiative." BrandProtect offers its customers a significant competitive advantage with average phishing take-down rates of four hours compared to the industry average of 5.5 days. This is enabled through BrandProtect's application of human analysis combined with state-of-the-art, proprietary technology addressing fraud, phishing attacks and other brand offenses in the most accurate, efficient and effective ways possible. The BrandProtect Internet monitoring technology comprises one of the world's largest Internet maps in commercial use. The technology, built by Microsoft Certified Partner Affinity Systems and recognized with a Microsoft 2006 Winning Customer Award, is based upon a highly scalable Microsoft SQL Server database containing more than 60 billion links mapped for eight billion URLs and 210 million Web sites. The combination of this technology with human analysis produces the highest quality data concerning known phishing threats. This data is fed to Microsoft to help power a URL reputation service as part of the Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer 7 and the Windows Live Toolbar. If a user visits a Web page the Microsoft Phishing Filter does not recognize as having a safe reputation, the Phishing Filter will check the Web site against a database of reported phishing sites using Microsoft's URL reputation service to learn more about the Web page. This URL reputation service is dynamically updated several times every hour using Microsoft's own data and BrandProtect data, along with other service providers. As the Phishing Filter scans the Web page itself for a suspicious number of characteristics common to phishing scams, it also checks with the URL reputation service. "The addition of BrandProtect to our roster of data providers for the Phishing Filter service underscores our commitment to deliver the most valuable set of anti-phishing data for Microsoft customers," said Alan Packer, product unit manager for reputation services at Microsoft. "BrandProtect's data will be a key resource in helping protect more than 100 million Internet Explorer 7 users worldwide against the ever changing threat of Web fraud and data theft."
