Dearborn Speech & Sensory Center Introduces Accent Reduction Services

Program Is Designed for Individuals With Mild to Strong Foreign Accents

DEARBORN, MI--(Marketwire - October 16, 2007) - If English is not your first language and you have difficulty being understood, Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center recommends that you consider their accent reduction services.

Unlike some providers of accent reduction services, clients of Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center work with certified speech-language pathologists who are able to address other issues as well, including articulation, grammar, voice disorders and help with public speaking.

"Our speech language pathologists come from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, so they are sensitive to the experiences and needs of our clients," said Lori M. Shaffer, a speech language pathologist and director of the Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center.

Depending on each individual's command of English and evaluation results, clients are enrolled in a seven week or 13 week program. Each program consists of a 1.5 hour session each week. Clients who attend each session without interruption and who practice daily can expect to experience at least a 50 percent improvement in their English pronunciation.

Sessions are conducted one-on-one or in small groups of three to five people. According to Shaffer, clients come from all walks of life, including professors to business professionals to homemakers to college students.

Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center therapists have been specially trained and certified in the Compton P-ESL program developed by Arthur J. Compton, Ph.D., of the Institute of Language and Phonology.

"Our services not only reduce a client's accent, they can help build confidence, reduce frustration and create new opportunities," added Shaffer.
