Marygrove College 'Have a Seat' Auction is November 8

Marygrove Groundskeeper Turned Found-Object Artist Donates Handmade Dining Room Set

DETROIT, Oct. 24, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Marygrove College will celebrate Founders' Day with the third annual "Have a Seat . . . and more!" Chair Auction and Strolling Dinner on Thursday, November 8, 2007, on its campus at 6:30 p.m.

International graphic designer and artist Dominic Pangborn and his wife Delia Pangborn are Honorary Co-Chairs. Local, national and international artists, including faculty, staff, students and alumni, have transformed vintage Marygrove chairs and other items into works of art. Non-chair items, such as paintings, a gift package and a timeshare in Aruba, will also be auctioned.

For the third year, Marygrove groundskeeper Martin McNeeley has donated chairs transformed by pieces of glass, stone, wood and wire. An avid recycler, McNeeley uses all or the majority of found objects to create his works. This year, he has donated a handmade dining room set with a table and four chairs, a desk and chair set, and two paintings. Early in 2007, McNeeley opened an art studio at the Detroit's 4731 Gallery on Grand River. He has been the lead groundskeeper of Marygrove's 52 acres on McNichols Road at Wyoming in Detroit for 15 years.

In addition to McNeeley and Pangborn, contributing artists include Charles McGee, Gilda Snowden, Nora Chapa Mendoza, Adnan Charara and several others whose work appears in prestigious galleries and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Park West Gallery is this year's Premier Sponsor. The auction begins with a VIP reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the strolling dinner and live and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. in the Madame Cadillac Building at 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221.

"Have a Seat . . . and more!" commemorates the founding of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHMs), Marygrove's founders and sponsors, in Monroe, Michigan, in 1845, as well as the College's founding in Detroit in 1927 and its predecessor, St. Mary College in Monroe in 1905.

Seats are available at the Friend level of $500, including two reservations for the 5:30 p.m. reception with the artists, dinner and auction; Premium level of $150, including the reception, dinner and auction; and Patron level of $100, including the dinner and auction.
