IP Boutique Wolf Greenfield Gains Top Litigator Allen Rugg, Expands Practice

Rugg Brings National Reputation in High-Stakes IP and Business Litigation

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - April 3, 2008) - Allen S. Rugg, a seasoned litigator, has joined the Boston intellectual property firm Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C. as a shareholder, bringing the firm's litigation group to 21 attorneys.

Rugg has more than 30 years' experience in complex litigation. He has tried more than 60 cases to verdict or judgment in state and federal courts and has argued several successful appeals to federal appellate courts in several circuits.

"To find someone with Allen's national stature, reputation, and experience is rare. He'll play an invaluable role as we continue to expand our litigation practice to meet the growing needs of clients," said Michael A. Albert, chair of Wolf Greenfield's litigation group.

Rugg has handled many high-stakes cases, including successfully opposing a $120 million damages claim against a semiconductor manufacturer in a patent-infringement case and winning a $23.8 million jury verdict in a trade-secret and breach-of-contract action against a national credit-reporting company.

"I am excited about using my skills and experience to help manage Wolf Greenfield's growing list of litigation cases and to connect with Boston's rich base of technology companies, universities, and research institutions," Rugg added.

Rugg was formerly a partner in the litigation department of Powell Goldstein LLP and managing partner of its Washington, D.C., office. He received his bachelor's degree from The George Washington University and his law degree from The George Washington University Law School.

"We are delighted to have Allen join us," said Timothy J. Oyer, the firm's managing partner. "His experience with a wide variety of litigation matters, both in the core IP area and in related fields, complements our strengths, and is especially welcome at this time of growth for the firm. It has been our intention for some time to add someone with Allen's profile, and we are pleased to have succeeded."

Wolf Greenfield has a strong track record in intellectual property litigation. It won the largest jury award in a Massachusetts IP case in 2007 for a medical-device client, Diomed Holdings, in a patent infringement case. In the landmark 1998 case, State Street Bank & Trust Co. vs. Signature Financial Group Inc., the firm helped win a US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decision establishing that business methods can be patented.

The largest firm in New England devoted exclusively to intellectual property law, Wolf Greenfield serves companies that make everything from pharmaceuticals to software to electronics to snowboards, as well as representing academic research centers. The firm counsels clients in the areas of patents, trademarks, copyrights, designs, trade secrets, and related licensing and litigation. Web: www.wolfgreenfield.com
