Travelzoo Reveals Summer Vacation Trends for Canadian Travellers

CALGARY, Alberta, May 14, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Travelzoo (Nasdaq:TZOO), a global Internet media company, revealed that nine out of ten (90%)* Canadians are planning on travelling this summer. This is according to the company's latest survey of its 600,000 Canadian subscribers. Of those planning a domestic vacation this summer, the survey also revealed that nearly six in ten (59%) are planning to take a metropolitan city vacation. The most popular cities travellers are planning to visit this summer, in order of popularity, were Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary.

"With Victoria Day approaching, the summer vacation season is heating up and Canadians are now in the process of making travel plans," said Mandy Gresh, country manager Canada at Travelzoo. "Many travellers are planning to take multiple trips this summer and city getaways are becoming more popular. We're seeing some great deals from many tourism organizations and city hotels looking to entice travellers."

Cosmopolitan cities aren't the only places that will see a surge in tourism this summer as more than half of travellers (55%) are thinking about planning on sticking their toes in the sand and taking a beach vacation this summer, while one-fifth of Canadians (22%) anticipate one of their vacations to be kicking it into high gear with an adventure vacation. For the gastronomically curious, two in ten travellers (19%) may aim to satisfy their taste buds with a culinary trip, while fifteen percent will do as the locals do with an immersion trip.

The survey also revealed that almost half of travellers are planning to travel outside of Canada this summer and that six in ten travellers (63%) do not believe the Canadian exchange rate will affect their choice of international destinations.

Whether travellers are looking to explore new terrain, catch up on a little R & R or treat themselves to some great local delicacies, there will be a little something for everyone. For those planning to travel within Canada this summer, the top 10 destinations in order of popularity are:

    * Niagara
    * Ontario Cottage Country
    * Toronto
    * Atlantic Canada
    * Vancouver
    * Montreal
    * Ottawa
    * Calgary
