Egenera Unveils Converged Infrastructure Solution to Simplify Data Center Management

New Unified Computing System Increases Capacity for Physical Applications, Supports Thousands of Virtual Machines

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - April 26, 2010) -  Interop Las Vegas 2010 -- Egenera today announced the general availability of Dell™ PAN System 3.0. The Dell PAN System is a converged infrastructure platform that transforms standard Dell blade servers and standard Ethernet components into flexible server, virtualized I/O, and converged network resources that can be dynamically and automatically allocated. Dell PAN System 3.0 delivers increased enterprise-scale performance while maintaining a significant cost advantage over traditional automation approaches as well as over other unified computing alternatives. The release of Dell PAN System 3.0 is part of the existing OEM partnership between Egenera and Dell.

  • Performance and functional enhancements in the Dell PAN System 3.0 include:
    • The just-released version of PAN Manager® 6.0 Software by Egenera® (see separate news release)
    • Increased scale-out and failover pools, to a maximum of 384 cores (using Dell m610 blades)
    • 5x increase in network uplink rate
    • 5x increase in internal converged fabric bandwidth
    • 2x increase in Fibre Channel uplink bandwidth
  • Benefits of the Dell PAN System 3.0 converged infrastructure include:
    • Elimination of costly I/O and networking components such as network interface cards, host bus adapters and cables -- to create a wire-once environment.
    • Software-driven infrastructure provisioning -- to simplify and accelerate server configuration.
    • N+1 High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) for physical, virtual and mixed infrastructure -- alleviating the need for complex clustering alternatives.
  • Dell PAN System 3.0 is jointly sold and supported by Egenera and Dell.
  • A Dell PAN System 3.0 converged infrastructure system with a complement of 48 two-socket, 2.26Ghz/16GB CPU blades, and redundant controllers is over 30% less expensive than equivalent converged infrastructure alternatives.

Dell PAN System 3.0 supports scale-out physical applications and thousands of virtual machines requiring HA and DR for business-critical applications. These properties make it an ideal unified Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform.
