Designer Handbag Concept Powered by 3M Technology

Innovative Fashion Accessory Uses 3M Miniature Projection Technology

ST. PAUL, MN--(Marketwire - May 11, 2010) -  Last year when French clothing label Kookai wanted to rethink the look and feel of their shops they turned to 3M's DI-NOC™ Architectural Finish. Recently the innovative technology leader again left a mark on the fashion world when New York-based student designer Sean Cabezas showed his vision of a future that merges haute couture with high tech. Cabezas, a senior design student at Parsons The New School for Design, unveiled a handbag concept that incorporates tiny digital projectors from 3M that not only act as a light source, illuminating the sides of the bag, but also a visual experience for anyone lucky enough to cross the path of the bag's fashionable user. A USB dock on the interior of the handbag allows the user to upload pictures or films that are projected across the bag's exterior, making it both a functionally customizable and visually stunning accessory.

The 3M MPro150 is the latest design in 3M's award-winning family of pocket projectors. The company's first pocket projector, the 3M MPro110, was recognized as the Grand Award winner in Popular Science's "2008 Best of What's New" awards while the 3M MPro120 was named one of PC World's "100 Best Products of 2009." Recently, 3M's miniature projection technology received the Gold Award in the technology category of the 2010 Edison Best New Products Awards.

Quotes

  • "Cabezas' innovative design concept illustrates the versatility of 3M's miniature projection technology and gives the world a glimpse at a future in which digital projectors will be as ubiquitous to daily life as the cell phone," said Gabe Wiebenga, Product Manager for 3M Mobile Projection. "It's yet another way to express your personality."
  • "I knew I wanted to use pocket projectors in this design concept," said Sean Cabezas. "The 3M MPro150 was the only one I identified as having the luminosity, battery life and dimensions to be a viable option for my bags."
