Nalco Statement on May 24 EPA Press Conference on Dispersant Use in the Gulf of Mexico

NAPERVILLE, Ill., May 24, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nalco (NYSE:NLC) today issued the following statement:

We are pleased that Administrator Jackson and Admiral Landry acknowledged that Corexit has achieved "positive" results in the Gulf of Mexico, with "limited environmental impact." We also note that Admiral Landry said COREXIT has prevented "much more" highly toxic oil from reaching U.S. shorelines.

Given the unprecedented scope of this oil leak, we support additional, more robust testing of the environmental impact of all EPA-approved dispersants, including an analysis of bio-accumulation and biodegradability of each product, as is required in other countries. Should the EPA request our assistance, we will work with the agency in any additional testing it wishes to conduct.

COREXIT is safe and effective, but if there is a better dispersant for use in the Gulf, we would welcome its use in mitigating this environmental disaster. Our sole focus has been to assist responders and to support the work being done to limit the damage of this continuing oil spill.
