Rías Baixas Albariño Wines Celebrate Summer's Arrival

Cool White Wine From Red Hot Spain Makes a Splash in NYC

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - June 11, 2010) -  As the temperature rises, New Yorkers can chill out with Albariño, Spain's cool, crisp, white wine during the first-ever NYC Albariño restaurant promotion which includes ten days of consumer, trade and press tastings. A highlight of the "Discover Albariño" campaign included Wednesday's industry grand tasting showcasing the latest Albariño releases from 14 producers who gathered at Zengo restaurant. Albariño's food-friendliness was deliciously expressed when paired with Chef Richard Sandoval's Latin-Asian offerings, such as seafood ceviche, empanadas, pork arepas and charred tuna wonton tacos. A host of winery principals including Miguel Ángel Fernández Villegas of As Laxas, Mariola Varona of Martín Códax, Jorge Pelaez of Marqués de Vizhoja and Enrique Abiega of Santiago Ruiz traveled to New York to share the 2009 vintage, considered to be of exceptional quality.

Once a closely guarded sommelier secret, Albariño wines from Rías Baixas, Spain have gained increasing popularity among American consumers. Albariño's appealing aromas of apples and citrus, minerality, and mouth-watering acidity complement a wide range of ethnic cuisines, and are perfect pairings with seafood dishes typical of the wine's coastal region of origin.

Katrin Naelapaa, Director of Wines from Spain, commented, "Having discovered Albariño during my student days traveling through Spain, I am excited that American wine lovers are now discovering Albariño's charms. Not only is it a great go-to wine for all seasons, but it is also affordably priced between $12 and $20."

Through June 19, 2010, an eXceptional group of restaurants are offering by-the-glass specials, bottle discounts, wine pairings and tasting menus highlighting Albariño wines from Rías Baixas Spain. Participating restaurants include Casellula, Casa Mono, at Vermilion, La Fonda del Sol and others. During the promotion, consumers can also check out tastings at local retailers, Albariño and food pairing seminars, cheese tastings and more. For details: www.discoveralbarino.com
