Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. Welcomes New Members to Organization's Boards

LOS ANGELES, July 19, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP) today announced the election of new members to the organization's two boards. The results of the election were ratified at CAP's annual meeting held July 15, 2010 in Los Angeles.

Othella Owens, MD, a board certified Los Angeles otolaryngologist, joins the Board of Trustees of the Mutual Protection Trust (MPT),CAP's core medical professional liability product. Dr. Owens joins the seven-member MPT board, after serving for one year as a member of CAP's Fellow Program. She replaces J. Michael Wormley, MD, a Glendora family practitioner who served as MPT board chair for more than 20 years. Dr. Wormley announced his retirement earlier this year.

"Dr. Owens brings to CAP not only valuable clinical expertise, but vast business knowledge, amassed by running her own practice for 10 years, and as founder of the annual Halle Berry Celebrity Golf Classic which benefits one of Los Angeles' most established domestic violence intervention programs," said CAP's Chief Executive Officer James L. Weidner. "We look forward to her contributions."

Other board changes include the election of current MPT board chair Juan Carlos Cobo, MD, and MPT board member Glenn Weissman, MD to the CAP Board of Directors. Dr. Cobo, a Mission Viejo general surgeon, and Dr. Weissman, an Arcadia otolaryngologist, will fill the vacancies left by the retirements of Los Angeles urologist Vincent Gualtieri, MD and San Diego orthopedic surgeon Carl Maguire, MD. Dr. Gualtieri joined the CAP board in 1997, while Dr. Maguire began his board service in 1993.
