Nalco Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 20, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nalco (NYSE:NLC), providing essential expertise for water, energy and air, has been named among the leading sustainability companies in world. The Company was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World Index for a third consecutive year and to the North America Index for the first time.

"It is gratifying to be selected among the top sustainability companies in the world for a third time," said J. Erik Fyrwald, Nalco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Sustainable development is not just another program; for a successful company it has to be the way you do business. This continuing recognition reflects our commitment to our vision of earning customers for life and enhancing the lives of our employees while protecting the planet."

The company remains committed to reducing the impacts Nalco facilities have on the environment. The sustainability results our customers have achieved with our technology dwarfs Nalco's own impact. A prime example is our green chemistry award-winning 3D TRASAR® cooling water automation. This single technology helped customers save more than 750 million cubic meters of water from 2006 through 2009, more than 40 times Nalco's global water use for all company operations over the same three year period.

Nalco was ranked among the best DJSI members in several categories:

  • Innovation Management,
  • Operational Eco-efficiency,
  • Environmental Policy/Management System,
  • Transport and Logistics, and
  • Occupational Health and Safety

Launched in 1999, the DJSI World Index captures the top 10 percent of the world's 2,500 largest companies based on economic, environmental and social criteria. The North America Index captures the top 20 percent of the 600 largest companies in the United States and Canada.
