ONA, Poynter to Collaborate on Digital Journalism Training and Best Practices in 2011

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - November 5, 2010) -  The Online News Association and the Poynter Institute will collaborate on training efforts, events and digital content in 2011 in a partnership that brings together the world's largest organization of digital journalists with journalism's premier training institution.

As part of the partnership, ONA members will receive discounts on training and Poynter will work ONA and the Newseum, an interactive museum of news in Washington, D.C., in its continuing efforts to preserve and celebrate best digital practices through ONA's Online Journalism Awards (OJA). ONA will help Poynter promote its training and events and contribute content to the institute's website, Poynter.org.

The most ambitious aspect of the partnership involves documenting the award-winning work behind the OJAs, which ONA administers. Poynter, working with ONA and the Newseum, will help promote and archive the work of winners over the past decade, as both an ongoing exhibit in the Newseum and by producing "how they did it" content to inspire other digital journalists.

"Each year the OJAs recognize the best of digital journalism, and I can't think of a better way to extend and honor that work than to use it as a basis for learning," said ONA Board President Christine Montgomery, Managing Editor of PBS.org. "The fact that training is at the essence of this partnership is key for us."

ONA members, who currently have free access to ONAvation webinars developed by Poynter's NewsU in conjunction with ONA, will see discounts on all Poynter training next year, from webinars to in-person seminars. ONA will help promote select training efforts produced by Poynter and will provide teaching content for the institute's website. Poynter and ONA also plan to team up to produce at least one major event in 2011.

"It's a win-win situation," said Stephen Buckley, Poynter's Dean of Faculty. "We've both got strong brands, and we believe our strengths as individual organizations will come together nicely. This helps Poynter to continue to build ties with digital journalists -- a crucial audience for us -- and this hopefully helps ONA with its focus on training and membership growth."

The Online News Association is the world's largest association of online journalists. ONA's mission is to inspire innovation and excellence among journalists to better serve the public. The membership includes news writers, producers, designers, editors, bloggers, technologists, photographers and others who produce news for the Internet or other digital delivery systems, as well as academic members and others interested in the development of online journalism. ONA also hosts the annual Online News Association annual conference and administers the Online Journalism Awards.

Poynter, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, trains journalism practitioners, media leaders, educators and citizens in the areas of online and multimedia, leadership and management, reporting, writing, and editing, TV and radio, ethics and diversity, journalism education, and visual journalism. Poynter's News University offers newsroom training to journalists and journalism students through interactive learning modules and links to other journalism education and training opportunities. Poynter's Web site, Poynter.org, is the dominant provider of journalism news, with a focus on business analysis and the opportunities and implications of technology.
