Exalt Microwave Systems Backhaul Analog SCADA, Ethernet Applications for Central Electric Power Cooperative

Exalt Systems Carry Mission-Critical TDM and Ethernet Traffic for Power Generation and Transmission Cooperative

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - February 2, 2011) -  Exalt Communications today announced that Central Electric Power Cooperative (CEPC) of Jefferson City, Missouri has deployed Exalt microwave backhaul systems to carry mission-critical TDM and Ethernet traffic among its power facilities and eight member cooperatives. CEPC is a transmission and generation cooperative, and its members provide power for approximately 165,000 customers across 27 counties in Missouri. CEPC's network is crucial to providing operational and management information across a network that spans the central portion of the state.

CEPC wanted to upgrade its legacy analog microwave network with SONET fiber, but it was impractical to hang new fiber to several locations. Instead, the company selected Exalt 5 GHz tri-band microwave backhaul systems to span hops averaging 10-14 miles. In other parts of the state, CEPC is using Exalt systems to carry communications-assisted relaying circuits across the network to substations with fiber terminals, and to back up fiber runs. Hops in the network carry numerous applications, including SCADA, outage management, CIS billing and accounting, Internet, e-mail, two-way radio, and VoIP.

"When we decided to upgrade our analog microwave network, we needed microwave systems that could support both TDM and IP traffic and reliably carry whatever we throw at them," said Scott Duncan, telecommunications superintendent at CEPC. "The Exalt systems give us the flexibility to run both kinds of traffic with a highly granular frequency selection capability that allows us to navigate around interference, and they have given us very reliable service."

The Exalt microwave backhaul systems are configured at various locations to carry up to four T1 lines and 5-100 Mbps of Ethernet. CEPC also provides key IT services to three of its member cooperatives using the Exalt microwave links in an Ethernet-only configuration as the diverse connection to the backbone fiber terminal equipment.

"When it isn't practical or cost-effective to use fiber in parts of a backhaul network, utility companies like Central Electric Power Cooperative choose our microwave backhaul systems because they provide fiber-like reliability in all weather conditions, are easily scalable, and support both native TDM and Ethernet," said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "These capabilities allow energy providers to leverage their existing infrastructures while they migrate their networks to Ethernet and support the widest possible range of applications including those required by new mandated regulations such as SmartGrid."

The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems -- indoor, outdoor, and split-mount -- offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 43 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
