Apothic Red(R) Wine Dating Survey Reveals Do's & Don'ts of Finding Love

Knowing Your Wine, Acting Mysterious and Using Facebook/Twitter Are Factors for Success

MODESTO, CA--(Marketwire - February 8, 2011) - Have you ever checked out your date's Twitter page before first meeting? Studied wine trends prior to having dinner together? Selectively removed information from your Facebook page to seem more mysterious? You're not alone. According to a new survey, these actions contribute to dating success. To uncork today's dating mysteries, Apothic Red, a new California red wine blend, commissioned a survey of more than 1,000 singles aged 21 and older. Below is a summary of the survey's top findings:

#1: Knowing Your Wine Will Win You a Second Date
Be savvy to the wine list. Nearly half of men (44%) agreed that knowing how to choose a wine is important upon a first meeting.

No faking! A majority of people (79%) feel that pretending to know a lot about wine is worse than admitting that they are a novice.

Don't break the bank. Two-thirds (67%) of women think buying an expensive bottle is just a way of showing off.

#2: The Social Network of Dating
Uncover the truth. When asked if they had ever checked out their potential beau before a first date, more than three-quarters (81%) of Millenials in the survey admitted to snooping via Google or Facebook. Actually, 1 in 10 said they know "everything" about their potential suitor prior to their first meeting.

With so much information available at the click of a button, nearly one-half (47%) of these Millenials have admitted to changing their Facebook profiles to seem more mysterious to a potential date.

#3: Dating Disasters
Escape artists! Of those who have escaped a dreadful date, nearly two-thirds (64%) have pretended to be sick or have a headache. Other excuses include accepting an "emergency" call (33%), having to leave for work (28%) and even sneaking out when your date is in the restroom (9%).

#4: Men Prefer Mystery

Put the phone away. According to men, 7 in 10 women have been too available -- immediately returning phone calls, texts and more after a first date. More than half of males (54%) are attracted to someone who seems mysterious rather than someone they know everything about.

Drop the baggage. One-third of men (32%) said that bringing up past relationships on a date is a turn off, whereas more than one-third of women (35%) said that talking about marriage or kids takes away from the mystery.

The Apothic Red wine survey was conducted among 1,006 nationally representative singles ages 21 and older. The interviews were facilitated by Wakefield Research between 1/21/11 - 1/26/11. Margin of error is +/- 3.1%. For the complete survey results, please contact Christine Reardon, Hunter PR, creardon@hunterpr.com
