Hoehn of The Bariatric Center of Kansas City announced today that he supports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval of the expanded use of the LAP-BAND® System, Allergan's gastric band. According to the FDA press release on February 16, 2011, the expanded use of the LAP-BAND® System, Allergan's gastric band was approved for adults with obesity who have failed more conservative weight reduction alternatives such as diet and exercise and pharmacotherapy; have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40; and at least one obesity related comorbid condition.
