Fujitsu Semiconductor and Verimatrix Officially Announce Partnership for Cardless DVB Set-Top Boxes

Embedded With Fujitsu's First Secure SoC, VCAS for DVB Provides Hardened Device Security for Deeper Penetration of New and Emerging Markets

HONG KONG and SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - March 21, 2011) - Fujitsu Semiconductor Pacific Asia Ltd. today announced with Verimatrix that Fujitsu's MB86H611 high definition, multi-standard decoder system-on-chip (SoC) has been embedded with Verimatrix's ViewRight® STB for DVB client security. Verimatrix is the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, and the enhanced SoC provides digital TV operators with a hardened security solution that can be easily integrated into low cost set-top boxes (STBs) for deeper penetration of digital TV services.

The MB86H611 is geared toward cable, satellite and terrestrial markets that require conditional access and advanced security. It supports H.264, MPEG 2 and VC-1 standards, and is compatible with China's AVS video formats with a resolution up to 1080p. The MB86H611 features a built-in two-way USB2.0 controller and Ethernet, making it an ideal solution for low cost STBs that require advanced security.

"Since entering the digital TV industry almost two decades ago, Fujitsu has been committed to providing reliable, complete and secure digital TV solutions to our customers," said Johannes Richter, general manager Home Entertainment at Fujitsu Semiconductor Pacific Asia Ltd. "Partnering with Verimatrix was a logical extension of this commitment because of the company's innovative and reliable approach to content security. We are confident that digital TV operators around the globe will benefit from our integrated solution, especially as they extend their services into new and emerging markets."

Verimatrix ViewRight STB for DVB is a robust package of portable embedded code that implements the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) for DVB security functions within each STB in a digital TV system. The secure SoC client utilizes the advanced security features of Fujitsu's modern SoC architecture, such as secure boot, control word obfuscation, secure code execution, protected memory and encrypted data paths securing the video pipeline but presents a standardized set of uniform revenue security interfaces to STB middleware.

An important capability of the VCAS for DVB solution is enabling operators to mix different STB client device types in the same network to suit the business profile of their subscribers. For example, cost-effective cardless DVB broadcast clients can be operated and managed alongside smart card-based STBs (including use of DVB-CI (Common Interface) modules) and advanced hybrid devices targeted at higher ARPU accounts with IP connectivity.

"Digital TV operators are increasingly turning to cardless security solutions to secure their set-top boxes, as it is extremely cost-efficient and opens up new revenue opportunities," said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer at Verimatrix. "Integrating Verimatrix's hardened security onto Fujitsu's SoC provides these operators with a unique opportunity to leverage this exciting new breed of security solution for broader penetration of pay-TV services."
