Cafe Culture Comes to USA

Coffee Pinotage a Huge Hit in Europe, Australia, and South Africa

GLEN ROCK, N.J., April 29, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- South African wine giant KWV and Opici Wines has announced that Café Culture is now available in the USA.

The "coffee wine" has been a huge hit in cafes, clubs, and wine bars throughout Australia, Europe, and South Africa.

No coffee nor coffee beans are used to flavor the wine. It is made from 100% Pinotage grapes – a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault that was created by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University in 1925. Pinotage wines tend to have a smoky, earthy character, and when fermented in specially toasted barrels, distinct mocha / coffee aromas and flavors can be coaxed from the grape.

"Some people have found Pinotage to be too earthy," says Don Opici, Managing Director of Opici Wines, "but Café Culture has a completely different flavor profile. In fact, most people have no idea that this is Pinotage until we tell them."

Much of the wine's success in other countries has been due to its fun, easy drinking, irreverent character.

"In South Africa, they call it the 'unwine'," relates Opici. "It's enjoyed by people who like wine, but don't want to take it too seriously. They drink it at cafes and wine bars after work to 'unwined'."

The coffee and mocha elements make it easier for people to understand.

"People who are intimidated by wine tend to like Café Culture," Opici explains. "Newbies don't necessarily 'get' all the aromas and flavors that oenophiles and wine critics describe. But with Café Culture, anyone can smell and taste the coffee notes, and being able to do that gives people confidence when talking about it."

Café Culture is available nationally through Opici Wines. Suggested retail price is $13.99.
