Universal Pictures' Fast Five Posts Strong Opening Weekend in IMAX(R) Theatres

Biggest Opening Film in Universal History Kicks IMAX's Summer Blockbuster Slate Into High Gear

LOS ANGELES, May 2, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) (TSX:IMX) and Universal Pictures announced today that Fast Five, which opened to No. 1 at the box office this weekend and marked the biggest opening weekend in Universal's history, posted strong opening results in IMAX® theatres. On 244 domestic IMAX screens, the IMAX release contributed approximately $8 million of the film's overall $86.2 million opening gross from Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1. The IMAX box-office per-screen average amounted to approximately $33,000.

"This is a strong kick-off to our summer blockbuster season, and given the film's incredible buzz, we're looking forward to continued success," said IMAX Chief Executive Officer Richard L. Gelfond.

"These terrific results reflect the great work done by Universal Pictures and the Fast Five filmmakers," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The broad appeal of this film, combined with our growing network of IMAX locations, has enabled us to expand our demographic reach and introduce even more movie fans to The IMAX Experience."

Fast Five has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology for presentation in IMAX. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique immersive environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

About Fast Five

In Fast Five, former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. Dwayne Johnson and Elsa Pataky join returning favorites Jordana Brewster, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for this ultimate high-stakes race.

Since Brian and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke Dom out of custody, they've blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he's not the only one on their tail.

Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey…before someone else runs them down first.

This film has been rated PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned - Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13) for intense sequences of violence and action, sexual content and language.
