St. Petronille School and TrueCare Partner to Improve Online Safety for Students

School Supports Teaching Children About Proper Use of Social Media Sites

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - May 20, 2011) - St. Petronille Catholic School in Glen Ellyn, IL -- part of the Joliet Diocese -- today announced it has partnered with TrueCare to educate its students and alumni on how to practice safe social networking skills. TrueCare is an Internet-based service that sends parents automatic email alerts that may provide an early warning of potentially concerning or dangerous online "friends," photos or posts within their child's social networking accounts like Facebook, Twitter, My Space and more. Through the service, TrueCare helps parents protect their children 24/7 -- no matter where children access their social network accounts -- at home, a friend's house or even their cell phones.

"TrueCare has made it much easier for our school to teach social media safety to parents and their children," said Dr. Mary Kelly, Principal of St. Petronille. "We're glad the Diocese of Joliet supports improving awareness of the dangers associated with social networking including cyber bullying, online predators, damaged reputations and self destructive behavior."

TrueCare features include:

  • Automatic alerts of potentially inappropriate or dangerous postings on a child's social network site
  • The ability for parents to see the photos that their children post to social network sites
  • One-click access in locating registered sex offenders in the users area
  • Determining who a child's online friends are with the Friends Network and Investigate Friend tools
  • Easy access to news articles & resources to educate parents and children on Internet safety, its risks and more
  • An online reference dictionary of hundreds of commonly used terms, slang and acronyms

St. Petronille School will receive a portion of the proceeds from the service every month.
