New Omron MEMS Development Work Displayed and Demonstrated at Sensors Expo, June 7-8

SCHAUMBURG, IL--(Marketwire - Jun 1, 2011) - Omron's Micro Device Division (MDD) has a number of new MEMS products in development to watch for in the coming year including an Absolute Pressure Sensor and a Thermal IR Sensing Array.

Expanding on their Piezo Resistive Pressure Sensor technology, a MEMS Absolute Pressure Sensor is nearing completion. Sealed on one side from atmospheric pressure, it is able to detect changes in elevation at a resolution less than 1 vertical meter. It could, for instance, be used to determine what floor of an office building a person is on. With an operating pressure of 50 to 110 kPa, target applications for this product include enhancement of GPS Navigation, Portable Navigation Devices, Weather Forecasting Equipment, and Vertical Velocity Indication.

A new technology coming from Omron's MDD is a MEMS Thermal IR Sensor being developed for building automation and energy savings. It consists of 8 MEMS Thermal IR sensors aligned in a 1x8 array. When positioned to scan a room, it can detect occupancy (regardless of movement) and determine if additional heating or cooling is required in localized areas. A 4x4 array is also in development, aimed at the home appliance market for electric stovetops.

Omron will be running a demo of this Thermal IR Sensor at Sensors Expo, June 7th and 8th in Rosemont, IL, booth 307. Expansions to their existing Pressure, Flow and Photomicrosensor product lines will also be on display. New flow sensors are being added to both sides of their current line-up and include a 70 mL/min high impedance version (also referred to as a differential pressure type flow sensor) and a 70-200 LPM sensor model for high flow applications.
