FreePlay Labs Launches "Cowboys & Aliens" Video Game App Exclusively for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Based on the Top-Selling Graphic Novel, App Combines Dual-Stick Shooter and Tower-Defense Elements -- A First on iOS

STAMFORD, CT--(Marketwire - Aug 2, 2011) - Today, after the action-packed, star-studded Cowboys & Aliens feature film roared into North American movie theaters taking top box-office honors, FreePlay Labs LLC, a developer specializing in interactive applications for smartphones and tablets, launched a high-end arcade game titled "Cowboys & Aliens: Silver City Defense," now available in the App Store exclusively for Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The app is based on the top-selling graphic novel created by Platinum Studios, Inc., an entertainment company that controls an international library of more than 4,000 comic book characters which it adapts, produces and licenses for all forms of media.

"Cowboys & Aliens" tells the story of an alien invasion in the late 19th Century. For the first time on iOS, the app combines elements from the popular dual-stick shooter and tower-defense genres. Taking on the role of gunslinger Zeke, the player sprints around Silver City, rallying other gunslingers and assigning them to various defense posts in order to take down Commander Dar's invading alien army, while collecting valuable resources for repairing the town and upgrading its defenses.

"'Cowboys & Aliens' is a powerful genre mash-up that pits cowboys and Indians against invading aliens, combining cool gadgetry and combat play in a way that's ideally suited to interactive entertainment," said Erik Whiteford of FreePlay Labs. "It offers a blend of action and strategy that will appeal to casual and hardcore gamers alike."

With "Cowboys & Aliens," FreePlay Labs has brought the property to life with innovative, tuned gameplay and striking high-end visuals, including the following:

  • Strategic overview: Plan your defenses and upgrade your town's automated "towers" with improved firepower and weapons.
  • Tactical combat: Use two virtual control sticks to maneuver and fire on the aliens as they swarm the town; select and enhance your weapons to maximize stopping power.
  • Multiple tower types: Attack nearby enemies with offensive towers and use defensive towers to augment the player's abilities.
  • High-resolution graphics: Experience stunning detail on the iPhone 4 and iPad.
  • Fifteen missions: Immerse yourself in the "Cowboys & Aliens" universe with hours of pulse-pounding gameplay.

To ensure that its game graphics are world class, FreePlay has partnered with Valkyrie Entertainment, a Seattle-based art team with credits on prominent console games including "Forza" and "Crackdown."

Released last Friday by Universal Pictures, the feature film version of Cowboys & Aliens stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde and is directed by Jon Favreau (the Iron Man films, Zathura: A Space Adventure). The film is executive produced by Steven Spielberg and produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, in addition to Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who is chairman and CEO of Platinum Studios and was the creator of the "Cowboys & Aliens" graphic novel. When first published in December 2006, it became the largest ordered graphic novel of the year.

Priced at $2.99, "Cowboys & Aliens" is available for any device running iOS 4 and higher. FreePlay is also developing expansion packs to give the game long-term playability on iOS devices.
