King-of-Color-Change, Del Sol, Makes Inc. 500/5000 List for Third Year

Del Sol apparel and accessories, famous for soaking up sunshine to change colors, add a splash of color to Inc. Magazine's annual list.

Salt Lake City, Aug. 23, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Being on the Inc. 500/5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies is one thing, but having the general public understand why is another. Del Sol stakes its claim to fame in being the world's largest retailer of products that change color in the sun. Every Del Sol clothing or accessory item changes colors outside in the sun - even its color-changing nail polish changes from one shade with sunlight to a completely different shade without.

The retail brand offers 24 different shades of nail polish that all change color in the sun, and more than 21,000 other color-changing products throughout its stores worldwide. Their products are basically like having two T-shirts or two bottles of nail polish built into one. Del Sol guarantees its products will change colors for the life of the product itself; e.g., a T-shirt's fabric is more likely to ware out than the color-changing dyes used in the shirt design.

How does it work? Del Sol’s Spectrachrome® dyes, the company's proprietary form of photochromic ink, reveal their hidden colors upon irradiation by ultraviolet waves; i.e., sunlight. When a flower blooms, the result is the exposure of the inherent, inner color of the flower. A Spectrachrome® dye is similar in that an energy-shift occurs causing the color of the dye to become visible to the human eye. The shifting or "twisting" of the dye is referred to as a molecular excitation transition. The dye does not actually change color; rather, its hidden colors become visible to the human eye.

"You’ve got to see the products change color in the sun firsthand to really get what it’s all about," says Jeff Pedersen, Del Sol President and CEO. "A light bulb sort of turns on and a smile comes across your face when you see any Del Sol product change from colorless to colorful out in the sun." Without sunlight, the products return to their original colorless state. Del Sol’s color-changing products are exclusively found in Del Sol stores or on the company’s Web site. Del Sol stores are typically found in premier tourist destinations and cruise ship ports throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and the continental U.S.

About Del Sol

Headquartered in Sandy, Utah, Del Sol was established in 1994 and has since grown to more than 100 stores worldwide in 25 countries.  Today it’s the world’s leading brand of color-changing apparel and accessories and the number-one promoted merchant onboard Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Disney, Celebrity, and Norwegian Cruise Lines. Based on a proprietary Spectrachrome® Technology, originally developed by NASA, crystals are harvested from the sunniest, most colorful places on the planet and then engineered for use on more than 21,000 retail items. Much like a flower that blossoms in the sun’s rays, Del Sol’s exclusive Spectrachrome® crystals open and unfold upon exposure to sunlight; revealing their hidden colors. Del Sol is the winner of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Retail, Utah’s Best of State Statue, and is found on Inc. Magazine’s 500/5,000 fastest-growing businesses, along with Utah’s Top 100 Private Businesses. Through humanitarian efforts, Del Sol has donated more than a million dollars worth of product and aid to victims of the Haitian earthquake, the South East Asia Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, as well as hundreds of other projects around the world and in the U.S. For more information about Del Sol’s culture, products and stores, please visit www.delsol.com
