Compass Media and MetaMetrics Providing Lexile Measures of English Books Published in Korea

Reading Metric Will Help Young Language Learners Build English Skills With Books at the Right Level

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - Sep 21, 2011) - Compass Media and MetaMetrics®, developer of The Lexile® Framework for Reading, are adding Lexile measures to the publisher's English language books. Educators and parents can use Lexile measures to select books that match a reader's ability level and support the development of English skills.

"Working with MetaMetrics, we will provide teachers and parents with a valuable tool -- the Lexile measure -- to help connect young readers with books that they will find interesting and that will support effective reading practice because the books are the right level of challenge to support English reading growth," said Compass Media representative Gi-cheol Gang.

Compass Media will add Lexile measures to the books in its new "Rainbow Readers Series" for elementary school students. The company plans to publish 60 books this year and another 360 books by mid-next year. When completed, the series will include a total of 420 fiction and non-fiction books with supporting photos and drawings on a variety of subjects, including humanity, society, history and science.

"Like any skill, learning the English language takes time and practice," said MetaMetrics President and co-founder Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. "With the addition of Lexile measures, Compass Media is helping young language learners maximize their practice time by connecting them with the right resources for developing their English skills."

A book receives a Lexile measure when MetaMetrics analyzes the complete text using propriety software that evaluates its various dimensions. Lexile measures range from below 200L for beginning-reader text to above 1700L for more advanced text.

The Lexile Framework is a unique tool for accurately matching readers with text. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework evaluates reading ability and growth based on actual assessment results, rather than generalized age or grade levels. Lexile measures help teachers, librarians and parents find books, articles and other resources within a reader's recommended Lexile range: 100L below to 50L above his or her Lexile measure. Reading materials within this optimal Lexile range will challenge the individual's reading ability, while still maintaining interest and learning.

Recognized globally as the most widely used reading metric, tens of millions of Lexile measures are reported annually from reading assessments and programs. For more information, visit www.Lexile.com.

Lexile measures first became available for Korean students in October 2009 from ETS's TOEFL® test and again in December 2010 from the TOEFL® Junior™ test. Lexile measures are also available from the Scholastic Reading Inventory and Natmal's English-Lectio Quotient (E-LQ).
